Dr. Kourtney Sims

Dr. Sims is a Georgia native who has become a Texas transplant.  She was born in Valdosta, Georgia where she was raised.  She received her undergraduate training from Xavier University of Louisiana and stayed in New Orleans for medical school training at Tulane Medical School.  After deciding on a career in Obstetrics and Gynecology she and her family moved to Houston, Texas.  Dr. Sims completed her OB/Gyn training at University of Texas Houston and has been in private practice since graduation. She is currently board certified by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology and is a fellow of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ACOG).   

She was the FIRST black female physician in Houston outside of the medical center who was certified by North American Menopause Society. She has structured her practice so that she can deliver these specialty services to the surrounding Houston community.

Currently, Dr. Sims is a member of several professional groups including the Harris County Medical Society, ACOG, The North American Menopause Society, the Association for the Advancement of Restorative Medicine, and the Texas Medical Association.  She also served as Interim Director of Midwifery at Bayshore Medical Center in 2008 and received the Patient's Choice Award from Vitals.com in 2008, 2009, 2010, and 2011. Dr. Sims is a HealthGrades Recognized Physician. She has received the Compassionate Doctor Award from Vitals.com in 2010 and 2011.  She has formally served as a member of the Intimina Medical Advisory Board and is currently serving on the board of the American Herbalist Guild. Dr. Sims has also served as the Chief Medical Advisor to Phenology, a division of Hologram Sciences.

Professional Organizations

Dr. Sims philosophy on medicine is one that is inclusive of both traditional and holistic therapies. Because of this she had made and effort to incorporate these therapies into her practice. In addition to her rigorous medical training she has also pursued several training in several complimentary fields to women’s health. She completed a certificate in plant based nutrition from the T. Colin Campbell Center for Nutrition Studies. She completed her education in Clinical Herbalism from one of the leaders of Western Herbalism Dr. T. LowDog and is also a member of the American Herbalist Guild. Dr. Sims has received training in Ayurveda approaches to health and Vedic Herbs from the Institute of Integrative Ayurveda Medical Education. She is also currently a member of the International Maharishi AyurVeda Foundation for Health Professionals. To round out her integrative practice Dr. Sims pursued education in the field of yoga and is a RYT-200 teacher. Currently she is in the process of completing her certification in functional medicine with the Institute of Functional Medicine while finishing up her meditation teacher certification.

Secondary to the integrative nature of her training and practice often when patients are diagnosed with common complaints they are given options inclusive of both a traditional and a holistic approach.  She particularly enjoys all aspects of hormonal issues like menopause, PMS, fertility, PCOS, fibroids and endometriosis as well as adolescent gyn and contraceptive counseling. Her goal is to provide integrative care plans for simple and complex women’s care issues and really enjoys providing her patients with more than just the “run of the mill” option but instead chooses to partner with patients in their health journey.  On a personal level she is also a busy wife and mother of two children.
